So no, this isn’t a movie about the now-rotund, hyper-talented Brazilian striker, however the perfectly quiffed, hyper-talented Portuguese one, Cristiano Ronaldo. And that’s somewhat of a shame, while he is quite astoundingly boring. You’d hope the people who made ‘Senna’ and ‘Amy’ could inject some type of drama in to the story of merely one of the world’s greatest footballers, however it doesn’t appear that there’s much can be found. This film traces annually in Ronaldo’s life because he heads towards the 2014 World Cup and tries desperately to win his third Ballon d’Or. He’s a hugely driven footballer, along with a beautifully talented one too. But it’s difficult to find pathos inside a spectacularly rich man attempting to win a trophy. It’s incredibly self-indulgent. This is Ronaldo’s long hard wank within the mirror. There’s a great deal about his family – his teary mother, his adorable son, his theatrical manager – nevertheless, you learn so little around the man behind everything that it feels like somewhat of a wasted opportunity. More of an own goal than the usual worldie.
